Jacob Adam “Ja” Gibson

May 24, 1984 – September 5, 2011

Bixby Spartan Baseball  1999–2002

Ja Gibson

Ja started on JV as a freshman pitcher and infielder, never playing on the freshmen squad.  While his sophomore year he appeared in 7 Varsity games, by his junior year he had earned his way to a regular position at 2nd base and led the team in 7 offensive categories: At bats (137), runs (37), hits (52), walks (26), On-base percentage (.509), stolen bases (15) and batting average (.380).  That year he was also named “Tulsa All-Metro Large Schools Honorable Mention” & “All-Metro Lakes Conference, 1st Team”.

His 2002 senior season was interrupted by major wrist surgery (which involved a bone graft from his right hip and a 13-week casting and rehab) following a 9-2 Bixby football season where he started at cornerback.  Through all that, his determination to help his team allowed him to come back to earn an infield position. Unfortunately, he

sustained another on-field injury to his throwing hand that year. Still, he performed wherever the team needed him and his contribution to the team’s GPA helped earn the Spartans the 2001 Baseball Academic State Championship.

After graduation, his love for baseball sent him to play at NEO alongside his brother Josh (All State 2000) who was the starting centerfielder and his roommate.  Gibson transferred to NOC, Enid his sophomore year where he roomed with his best friend & team mate, Justin Delay. Ja received his Associate Degree from NOC then went on to complete his BA in Business Administration from NSU, Tahlequah in 2006.

At the time of his death, Ja was Lease Sales Representative for Penske Truck Leasing in Tulsa, a 3rd promotion in less than 2 years.   In five months in that position, he had earned the Penske Winners Circle Award for annual performance.

It was his trust in God and his willingness to always do his best for Him that allowed Ja to do his very best in everything he was involved in, a life he carried with him from the days of working hard on the field as a Bixby Spartan to that of a husband and father. All too early, Ja left behind the love of his life, Joni and their beautiful daughter, Dani.NOC Jets
